About

Eivind Jacobsen is the Institute Director of SIFO, has his basic education as a sociologist and a PhD in science studies. Jacobsen has worked as a research scientist at SIFO since 1989. The field of work has varied over time, from analyzes of value chains, retail trade, competition and consumer influence, to studying shopping/procurement and everyday life practices. Jacobsen has also done work on consumer mobilization and consumer policy and on the preconditions for political/ethical consumption.
Jacobsen took his PhD on everyday kitchen practices in private homes. Cooperating with microbiologists and food risk experts, he looked at habits, believes, perceptions and material conditions for safe cooking.
In recent years, Jacobsen has been particularly inspired by so-called Practice Theory (Warde, Schatzki) and Material Semiotics (Law, Latour), where habitual, performative and material aspects of consumer's everyday life have been given attention. In this context, he has also been concerned with the historically changing character of the consumer role, shaped by social, political and technological conditions.
Jacobsen is also concerned with the importance of research being multi- and transdisciplinary. To understand a multifaceted reality, different approaches and perspectives are required to challenge and complement each other.
