Boehler has an MA (2008) and PhD (2013) in interdisciplinary musicology from the University of Oslo. He is a musicologist with additional expertise in the social sciences. His main area of research is the intersection between aesthetics and politics, and the relationship between music and politics. Boehler has done research on this issue in Norway and in Latin America, with a focus on Cuba, Brazil and Haiti. Boehler also works as a scholar within welfare research related to the consequences of unemployment, participatory democracy, and persons with disabilities.
He has been a visiting scholar at the Univ. of Berkeley, California (2011), and a visiting Fulbright Fellow at the Univ. of Texas, Austin (2011-12). Boehler will be a visiting scholar at the Univ. of Campinas, Brazil (2016-17), the Univ. of Havana, Cuba (2017), and the Univ. of Texas, Austin (2018) as part of his four year research project: “The Politics of Music in a Changing Latin America: Brazil, Haiti and Cuba"
