By education a social psychologist, Hansen has worked mainly in the areas of gerontology and mental health and well-being. He prepared his doctoral thesis (2010) at the University of Oslo (Faculty of Medicine). The title of the thesis was "Subjective well-being in the second half of life". To date, publications include studies of aging, mental health, well-being, childlessness, informal caregiving, gender division of housework and childcare.

ACCESS Life Course Database: Upgrade and Expansion
Through the ACCESS Upgrade infrastructure, researchers and students will gain access to updated and upgraded longitudinal life course data for more than 6,000 men and women aged 49 years and older.

This project investigates pathways and outcomes of active ageing in three domains and their interactions: the labor market, civil society, and the family.

Activity friend for persons with dementia
The project addresses what role the "activity friend" volunteers play in municipal health care and for people with dementia in Norway.
