About

I have a longstanding interest in student engagement with mathematics, and the influence of family history, classroom experience, personal narrative and peer discourses in the construction of mathematical literacy and relationships with mathematics from secondary school through to undergraduate level. My current research concerns the issue of inclusion in mathematics, focusing on classroom practices, gender and identity, and the impact of curriculum design on student engagement. I also research the development of teachers’ pedagogic practice, particularly their appropriation of new practices. I have been working at OsloMet for 10 years, but I am also Professor of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, where I am working with a large team of materials designers and teacher educators on a nationwide trial of Realistic Mathematics Education.
