Aims and contents
The objective of the program is to give students an understanding of substantive issues related to the relationship between religion and politics.
The academic semester programme (30 ECTS-credits) is composed of two courses:
Anthropology: Religion and Power (10 ECTS)
The course in social anthropology offers an overview of enduring anthropological fields of interests, such as religion and ritual, political structures and the dynamics of power, kinship, gender, ethnicity, ecology, economy, sociocultural change, and research practices and methodology. The curriculum is composed of a textbook introducing the general anthropological perspectives, which are exemplified by a selection of ethnographic monographs, providing in-depth analyses of human experience under different social and cultural circumstances.
Religion, Society and Power in South Asia (20 ECTS)
The course provides knowledge of religious diversity and pluralism in the South Asian region, in a contemporary and historical perspective. The interplay between different religious traditions and their reciprocal influence in shaping the region will be a key concern. Emphasis is also put on religious diversity in Nepal and on the relationship between religion and politics in the modern Nepalese state. The goal is to enable analytical reflection on religious pluralism as a phenomenon.
