Why do our cities look the way they do? Who decided, and how does it affect the people who live there? These are questions I have explored these questions for many years.
I am a human geographer and Head of Research for housing, place and regional studies at NIBR. I combine geography with science and technology studies (STS) and look at how knowledges and technologies shape and value place.
In Oslo, I have studied gentrification and what urban renewal means for residents.
In the Arctic, I explore how Nordic colonialism has left its mark on housing and cities, recently focusing on Nuuk in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). Archives are important, but rarely tell the whole story. That is why I use different methods and work with artists and others who hold knowledge of these places and stories.
Besides place, economy is a growing thread in my work. I have explored the economization of the ocean and its living beings, and now bring this into my studies of place: How is value created, by whom, and how does this shape the places we live in and with?
