Summary
Jordan, a major humanitarian aid hub, plays a significant role in supporting displaced people from the region. This research examines power relations in Jordan's humanitarian aid sector, focusing on the tension and challenges faced by aid professionals. Through qualitative research and interviews, it uncovers how colonial and neoliberal influences shape humanitarian labour and result in tensions, dependencies, and contradictions.
The thesis highlights often unseen aspects of humanitarian work, such as moral labour and everyday professional resistance, and discusses the precarity faced by aid workers. Moreover, it highlights the personal and intimate nature of aid work. The thesis largely centres on national Jordanian aid professionals, thereby contributing to the small but growing field of literature focusing on national aid professionals from the Global South. Lastly, it discusses the blurred boundaries between humanitarian aid and international social work and advocates for more dialogue between these fields.
