Political Ecology of Education (PHUV9490)

PhD course

The course will critically examine the mainstream and alternatives to education about climate, the environment, and green transformation alternatives.

  • Application and admission

    The application deadline is 15 January.

    Supplementary application rounds from 1 February with a deadline 15 March for study places that were not filled during the primary application round.  

    Admission requirements

    • The admission will require a five-year master’s degree (three years + two years) or equivalent qualifications in social sciences, teacher education or in any other subjects or fields for which the course is seen as relevant for the applicant. 
    • All applicants must submit a brief summary in English of their PhD project (about ½ - 1 page).
    • All applicants must submit a text of 250 - 500 words in English (+ eventual literature references) about their motivation and background for taking part in this course, and how they consider the course to be relevant for their PhD project. 
    • Five seats will be reserved for applicants who are enrolled as PhD students at OsloMet’s Faculty of Education and International Studies.

    In line with the general rule for PhD courses at our faculty, the course will only be held if admission is granted to at least five students.

    Ranking of applicants

    The ranking of applicants who fulfil the admission requirements for the external 15 seats and internal 5 seats will be made according to the quality of the submitted texts and relevance of the course for the candidates’ PhD projects. To further distinguish between candidates of the same standing, an emphasize will be made of providing a course with participants with diversity with respect to their universities and geographical backgrounds. 

  • How to apply

    If you apply for one of the 15 seats for external applicants and have not previously taken a PhD course in the PhD programme at OsloMet’s Faculty of Teacher Education and International Studies,  in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education, please follow this recipe:

    1. Register your application in Søknadsweb (fsweb.no).
    2. Upload the required documentation in Søknadsweb.

    If you are either an internal applicant or you are an external applicant who have previously taken a course in our PhD programme, you must apply via Studentweb (student.oslomet.no)

    If you are in a PhD programme at any other university than OsloMet (at a Norwegian university)

    • Confirmation from your PhD programme containing: Name of the PhD programme, institution, and the month and year you started.
    • Final diploma/Degree certificate (master' s level). This does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.
    • Transcript / mark sheets (master' s level). This does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.

    If you are enrolled in a PhD programme at OsloMet

    • No documentation requirement.

    An Academic Employee at OsloMet

    • Final diploma/Degree certificate (bachelor's and master' s level). Does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.
    • Transcript / mark sheets (bachelor's and master' s level). Does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.

    An Academic Employee at a university other than OsloMet (at a Norwegian university)

    • Final diploma/Degree certificate (bachelor's and master' s level). Does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.
    • Transcript / mark sheets (bachelor's and master' s level. Does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.
    • Workplace: Link to your “staff” page at your University/University College: to be written in the comments field in Søknadsweb

    Other applicants

    • Verification of identity (copy of passport, attestation from the National Population. Does not apply to applicants with a master's degree from OsloMet.

    It is mandatory to do all steps within the application deadline. Applications without required documentation will not be processed. 

  • Target group

    The course welcomes applications from PhD candidates with a broad range of backgrounds including social science studies about sustainability, climate, the environment or green transformation, as well as applicants from the field of education. Applicants from various countries and universities are welcome.

  • Course certificate

    Participants who have completed and passed the course may obtain documentation themselves. You can order a transcript of grades on Studentweb (fsweb.no) or it can be obtained from Vitnemålsportalen (vitnemalsportalen.no). You can find more information about grade transcript and diploma on the student pages (student.oslomet.no).
