This course equips students to investigate complex financial issues and uncover hidden power structures by combining classic watchdog journalism with modern data-driven methods. Through practical assignments and case studies, students will learn to analyze economic systems, financial documents, and use digital tools like scraping, databases, and data analysis, alongside ethical reflections.

Admission requirements

This course is open to bachelor’s degree students in journalism, communication or media studies, or similar.

Content

  • Understanding basic structures of the economy, public budgets, and financial accountability.
  • Identifying, finding and analyzing structured financial and economic data.
  • Using digital tools to support investigative findings and presenting them clearly to the public through writing, data storytelling, and visualization.
  • Critically reflecting on transparency, power, and the role of journalism in economic systems.

Course description

Coursework requirements

The following coursework requirements must have been approved for the student to take the exam:

  • Group investigation (2-4 students/group): Digital Follow-the-Money Project resulting in a group presentation (10–15 minutes) and a written summary (3–5 pages). 
  • Thematic reading presentation in groups (10–15 minutes) and written summary (3–4 pages).
  • Individual opinion piece: 1-2 page op-ed written for a general audience, applying journalistic insights to a recent financial controversy, case, or policy issue.

Exam and assessment

Individual home exam (6–8 pages), written over three days, reflecting critically on a selected case or theme covered in the course, linking practical and theoretical perspectives.

Costs

There is no semester fee for exchange students.
