Sound and vision: Documentary film and audio production

For exchange students

This is a creative and vibrant media production course centered on long-form journalistic storytelling in video and audio. Students will hone skills in story development, field production, project planning, and script writing to create compelling documentary media projects.

Admission requirements

This course is open to bachelor’s degree students in journalism, communication or media studies, or similar. The course presupposes basic practical and theoretical knowledge of non-fiction storytelling.

Content

  • Sound and images as key components of audiovisual storytelling 
  • Dramaturgy, storytelling structure and storytelling techniques
  • Devise, plan and produce a documentary film or audio project from idea to final product.
  • Collaborative work in a team to produce a creative, fact-based, narrative documentary project.

Course description

Coursework requirements

The following coursework requirements must have been approved for the student to take the exam:

  • Obligatory participation in the workshops (duration 1-2 weeks) at the start of the semester.
  • Analysis of documentary projects; writing brief analyses (2-3 pages) and discussing at group meetings.
  • Concept proposal of intended project, two parts. Part A: a written 2-page concept proposal; Part B: an oral presentation (10-20 minutes) to the class of the planned project. 
  • Production of either a documentary video or a documentary podcast, either individually or in groups of two students.

Exam and assessment

Final assessment in the course consists of a final exam in two parts: 

  1. An individual portfolio consisting of a project outline and production plan, 6-8 pages in total.  The work must document the students' work process - from idea to finished product.   
  2. An individual adjusting oral exam no longer than 30 minutes. 

Students must have passed part 1 to be able to go up to part 2, the oral exam.
