Civil and Structural Engineering

Bachelor's course
For exchange students

This 30 ECTS programme is a part of the regular Bachelor's Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering, and represents the 5th semester. There is a focus on Statics, Steel and Timber Design along with Architecture and Design.

  • Admission requirements

You must be a third year bachelor's student in Civil and Structural Engineering with basic skills in mathematics, physics, mechanics and structural analysis.

  • How to apply

International exchange students select courses when applying for exchange.

    Application deadline: 15 April.

  • Costs

There is no semester fee for exchange students.

You can choose three of these courses:

  • Architecture and Design 10 ECTS (BYVE3615)

This course will provide a basis for developing an understanding of, and the ability to assess, the aesthetics, styles and architecture of our built-up environment and historical development to date.

The course will develop your insight into the concept of building tradition and the adaptation of new buildings and building projects to your surroundings. It will also give you knowledge of the constructional history of architecture.

    • Teaching methods

      • lectures
      • assignments
      • city walks
      • excursions and inspections of building environments and building projects in Oslo
      • visual architectural documentation from films, slides etc.
      • lectures by students

Canvas software is used as an aid.

    • Exam and assessment

      • four compulsory assignments must be approved before you can take the exam
      • an individual three-hour written digital exam
  • Design of Steel- and Timber Structures 10 ETCS (BYVE3200)

This course covers limit state design of beams, columns and complex load-bearing structural elements of wood and steel in building sections in terms of ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state and accidental limit state.

The course covers joining by welding, bolts and nuts, nails, screws and timber connectors.

The course will provide an understanding of load effects, material properties and use of information provided in other standards. Tests of rupture and shear strength on simple wooden testpieces.

The course covers an introduction to the Robot design software.

The course is based on BYPE1100 Physics and Mechanics and BYTS2100 Building Materials and Concrete Design.

    • Teaching methods

      Lectures and supervised exercise assignments.

    • Exam and assessment

      • four compulsory assignments must be approved before you can take the exam
      • an individual three-hour written digital exam
  • Statics 10 ECTS (BYVE3300)

This course provides background knowledge for the finite element method (used for trusses, beams and diaphragms), so that you can understand the structure of finite element method (FEM) software and the limits and possibilities element analyses represent.

Furthermore, the course gives you knowledge about capacity calculations for trusses, beams and frames using plastic theory and the second-order theory of deflection.

    • Teaching methods

      Lectures and exercises.

    • Exam and assessment

      • four compulsory assignments must be approved before you can take the exam
      • an individual three-hour written digital exam
  • Technology and Society 10ECTS (STKD6610)
