PhD Fellow in Evidence-Based Bridge Assessment and Maintenance Prioritization

Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with 23,000 students and over 2,600 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.

The Department of Built Environment offers bachelors and master’s degree programs in engineering, in addition to research and development activities. The department has approximately 60 staff members and 850 students.

The Department of Built Environment (BE) at Oslo Metropolitan University has a vacancy for a PhD candidate available in bridge assessment, monitoring, and prioritization of maintenance. The project aims to develop an integrated decision-support framework that combines inspection images, sensor data, and engineering interpretation to enable more transparent, evidence-based maintenance decisions.

Your main duties and areas of responsibility

Norway’s bridge infrastructure is aging, and the need for data-enabled inspection, maintenance, and rehabilitation is increasing. At the same time, increasing volumes of data are generated by various inspection methods and measurement technologies. The project addresses challenges related to fragmented data flows, varying inspection outcomes, and limited decision support for planning and prioritizing maintenance activities. Its main objective is to develop and validate an integrated framework for evidence-based bridge assessment and maintenance prioritization that integrates multiple types of inspection and monitoring data into a consistent workflow for decision support.

The project is anchored in SmartMet Lab at OsloMet and will be carried out in collaboration between structural engineering and data-oriented research environments. The work includes structuring and analyzing multi-source bridge-condition assessment data from drone-based imagery, LiDAR, and related sensing technologies. The project will also explore how methods from data analytics and artificial intelligence can support more efficient damage identification, condition assessment, and maintenance prioritization. The results are expected to contribute to more systematic and knowledge-based infrastructure management. The project may also include a short-term research stay at Iowa State University.

The position is advertised as a 3-year position with 100% research, or a 4-year position with 75% research and 25% other career-advancing work. The goal must be to complete the PhD program/degree within the decided time frame. The decision on a 3- or 4-year position will be discussed as part of the interviews in the hiring process.

As a PhD Fellow at OsloMet, you have the opportunity to apply for funding for extended research stays abroad.
