About the position
The Department of Built Environment https://www.oslomet.no/en/about/tkd/be at Oslo Metropolitan University has a vacancy for a PhD candidate available in the area of railway systems/railway sleepers in UHPC. The position will be a four‑year position with 25% career development duties in the field of railway systems/ railway sleepers made with ultra high performance concrete (UHPC).
The position is affiliated with the project “design, fabrication, and full-scale testing of railway sleepers made with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The project aims to develop and validate durable UHPC sleeper solutions that can improve structural performance, reduce maintenance needs, and extend the service life of railway infrastructure under demanding loading and climate conditions.
The desired start date is 1st January 2027.
Your main duties and areas of responsibility will be to
Railway systems face persistent challenges related to the deterioration of conventional timber and concrete sleepers, including fatigue cracking, rail-seat abrasion, freeze-thaw damage, and reduced service life. These challenges are particularly critical in cold-climate railway infrastructure, where repeated temperature fluctuations, moisture ingress, snow and ice, and high traffic demands accelerate degradation and increase maintenance needs.
This PhD project will develop and validate railway sleepers made with UHPC. The work may include, but is not limited to, UHPC material design and optimization, durability testing under harsh environmental conditions, fabrication and full-scale structural testing of sleepers under static and cyclic loading, numerical modelling, lifecycle and sustainability assessment, and pilot testing and monitoring in Norway. The specific activities may be adjusted or further developed based on project needs and research progress. The project will be carried out in collaboration between OsloMet, Iowa State University, and the Norwegian Railway Directorate, and will include a pilot study under real railway operating conditions to support practical recommendations for more durable and sustainable railway infrastructure. The candidate will also be expected to undertake a research stay at Iowa State University for a defined period as part of the project.
In addition to the project, the position is advertised with 25% career development work such as teaching and supervision on the department study programs.
As a PhD Fellow at OsloMet, you have the opportunity to apply for funding for extended research stays abroad.
