The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.
The Department of Product Design (PD) is a creative and internationally oriented institute with approx. 30 employees. We work with products, services and systems and are committed to close links with the business community. We offer a bachelor's programme in product design and a master in design in complexity, as well as a PhD programme in innovation for sustainability. The department has three research fields in the areas of design/aesthetics/materiality, systemic design and design for health.
Are you passionate about teaching service design and systemic thinking to the next generation of designers? We are looking for an established design professional with expertise and passion for teaching, research, and innovation in service design to join the Department of Product Design at OsloMet. We are seeking an active, collaborative, and creative colleague to strengthen service design in our design education and research activities.
The Department of Product Design invites applications for a permanent full-time position as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Service Design. The position primarily involves course responsibility, teaching, and supervision at the bachelor's level, but will also include supervision and teaching assignments related to the master's program. We are looking for someone who is an experienced practicing service/system designer with industry and teaching experience, or someone who has completed a Ph.D. in the field. There is a strong focus on research and development at the faculty. The department has three research groups with significant activity in the areas of design/aesthetics/materiality, systemic design, and design for health. It is expected that the person hired will participate in commissioned work and development projects at the department, conduct research, and publish.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Teaching and supervision in design at various levels, preferably in Service Design
- Planning, implementation, and development of courses
- Academic administrative work, independently and in teams
- Participate in, collaborate on, and lead academic development work, research projects, and assignments within various initiatives
- Facilitate good dialogue internally, with the design industry, and with other external partners
Qualification requirements
- Extensive experience with relevant methodology for service and/or systemic design
- Experience with teaching and supervision at university and/or university college level
- Experience with sustainability as an integrated part of the design process
- Extensive experience with visual communication and relevant software
- Written and oral proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, and English.
The requirements for a position of Associate Professor are in addition:
- Ph.D. or equivalent in Service Design or related areas
- Research primarily in Service Design or related areas such as systemic design. Extensive experience as a practicing as a practicing service designer may fulfil this requirement if documented with a portfolio of relevant complex projects
The applicant must document relevant educational competence in accordance with OsloMet’s Guidelines for the assessment of educational competence at OsloMet.
The requirements for a position of Senior Lecturer are in addition:
- Documented extensive research and development work that in quality and scope corresponds to the workload and level of a Ph.D. dissertation in service design or related areas
or
- Documented extensive artistic development work that in quality and scope corresponds to the workload and level of a Ph.D. dissertation in Service Design or related areas
and
- Special qualifications in teaching or other educational activities will be given great importance
and
- Documented relevant practical-pedagogical competence based on education or teaching and supervision
General criteria for employment in teaching and research positions follow the Regulations on Employment and Promotion in Teaching and Research Positions (FOR-2006-02-09-129) cf. transitional rules described in the Regulations to the University and College Act § 13.2.
Applicants who do not have adequate proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, shall be offered Norwegian courses, and must acquire Norwegian skills corresponding to at least level B2 within three years of appointment.
Emphasis will be placed on
- Experience in initiating, leading, or participating in research projects and/or leadership/participation in projects within Service Design
- Relevant work experience from the design industry
- Pedagogical skills and teaching abilities and an interest to further develop these
- Experience in writing applications and obtaining external funding
- Flexibility and ability to adapt teaching to OsloMet's and the department's needs - including interdisciplinary collaboration

- Ability to work effectively and adapt to a dynamic work environment

The salary for the position is in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreements in the state and OsloMet's salary policy in position code 1198 Senior Lecturer / 1011 Associate Professor, corresponding to NOK 667 700-821 100 per year. A 2% pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) is deducted from the salary. For particularly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
