Randi Wærdahl er utdannet Dr.polit i sosiologi fra Univeristetet i Oslo. Hennes forskning er knyttet til tematikken barn, sosialisering, oppvekst, barndom og familie, med spesielt fokus rettet mot overganger og tilpasninger til nye livsfaser og nye sosiale og økonomiske realiteter. Doktorgradsarbeidet handlet om hvordan forbrukssamfunnet legger til rette for en sosialisering hvor individuell kompetanse til å gjøre valg blir viktig. I post doc perioden ved Universitetet i Oslo studerte Wærdahl mellom annet hvordan urbane kinesiske barnefamilier tilpasser barneoppdragelse og framtidsplanlegging til nye økonomiske realiteter.
I tillegg til publikasjoner på flere substansielle sider ved barns levekår, har Wærdahl publisert flere arbeider om metodiske utfordringer i praktisk forskning, samt bidratt til den kritiske diskusjon av data og analyse i kvalitative metoder.
