Early Childhoods in the Postdigital: Inquiry into the Literacies of Young Children’s Contemporary Play with New Media Technologies

The project explores young children's play with new media technologies at home and in pre-school.

The project aims to describe young children's play with new media technologies, and to explore ways to examine this play.

Play is a fundamental activity in young children's lives and new media technologies are often entangled in young children's play in ways that disrupt the supposed distinction between the digital and analogue.

Through qualitative case studies, this project examines how young children play with new media technologies at home and in kindergarten. The project builds on the completed doctoral project of the project leader, undertaken at the Department of Education at the University of Oslo (2019–2023), and uses existing data from this project.

One pre-school and three toddlers were visited over 19 months, and the analyses are based on video recordings, audio recordings, photographs and field notes from these visits.
