PhD course

The course specialization will provide an understanding of the theoretical approaches and conceptual frameworks within information, library and archival science in general, and to the candidate's own thesis topic in particular. The course contributes to creating synergy and communication between the field and the candidate's own work.

Course period autumn 2025

 Three days from 23 to 25 September.

Application and admission

The course is  offered to PhD candidates.

  • Internal candidates use Studentweb (fsweb.no) and register themselves, or contact the PhD administration.
  • External applicants use Søknadsweb (fsweb.no). Search for Doctoral modules and then Doctoral modules Faculty of Social Sciences.
    The necessary attachments to be loaded into Søknadsweb is:
    Confirmation of admission to a PhD programme.
    Short summary, approximately one A4 page, with information about your own PhD project and why hy this PhD topic is relevant to your project. 

Course structure

The course is planned to facilitate international students' course participation. It consists of a three-day seminar in September, where the students also give a short oral presentation of their project, in combination with independent studies of literature, and feedback on exam papers. The course is given in English.

Course description

The content of this doctoral study course is based on selected fields of contemporary research in the library and information science (LIS). It is designed to Nordic doctoral students, but also suitable for doctoral students in LIS in any other part of the world or in related research areas. The emphasis is laid on following research themes: Information and society; Mediation of literature in LIS; Knowledge organization & Knowledge management; Scholarly communication and Scientometrics; Information behaviour and practices; Archival records; and Interactive information retrieval. The course is focused on the active research fields, the lectures are delivered by internationally established Nordic researchers, and the required literature is inclined to reputable research published in English language.

Students can opt for one of two modules, one with 5 ETCS and the other 7,5 ETCS. The differences in ETCS is reflected in the length of the exam paper.
