The centre is a collaboration between OsloMet and Simula Research Laboratory, and its main mission is to conduct excellent research in selected areas of information technology: artificial intelligence, communication systems, and IT management.
At SimulaMet, fundamental research is combined with applied research. The centre plays a central role in researching, as well as developing and evaluating, digital solutions that can be used in the public sector, industry, and by society in general.
In the field of artificial intelligence, new methods and solutions are being developed with applications in areas including health and sport, and for improving and understanding the technology.
Research on communication systems contributes to making digital infrastructure more robust, better utilisation of wireless networks, and contributes to the development of Norway's new emergency network.
In IT management, researchers investigate how large IT projects can be improved, and run a network for increased competence through knowledge sharing.
The centre collaborates closely with Norwegian and international partners, and has several long-term assignments for Norwegian authorities, in addition to a portfolio of projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the EU.
Education is an important part of SimulaMet’s mission. They contribute to the education of PhD and Master’s students at OsloMet and have been involved in developing the PhD programme in Engineering Science.
SimulaMet has also contributed to the establishment of the AI Lab at OsloMet, which manages research and student projects in artificial intelligence.
SimulaMet offers supervision for Master’s students writing theses within their research areas, and regularly recruits PhD research fellows (simulamet.no).
Research centres at SimulaMet
SURE-AI: Centre for Sustainable, Risk-Averse and Ethical AI (sure-ai.no) is a national centre for artificial intelligence that aims to make the technology more sustainable, reliable, and ethical.
CRNA: Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications focuses on making networks and applications more robust, secure, and reliable.
EDOS: Centre for Effective Digitalisation of Public Sector research how the public sector can succeed with digitalisation, looking at barriers and success factors.
The history
Simula Metropolitan Centre for Digital Engineering (SimulaMet) was established in 2018 as a long-term, strategic collaboration between Simula Research Laboratory and OsloMet. It was part of a national initiative to strengthen research and educational capacity in ICT and digitalisation.
The Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA), which is funded by the Ministry of Digitalisation and Public Governance (DFD), was quickly transferred from Simula Research Laboratory to SimulaMet.
In 2020, a new centre funded by the DFD was established, the Centre for Effective Digitalisation of Public Sector (EDOS). In 2025, SimulaMet became the host for one of the six national AI centres in Norway, the Centre for Sustainable, Risk-Averse and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (SURE-AI).
