Contested Public Service Media? Criticism, response and accountability

The project studies media critics and their messages, as well as how NRK facilitates and responds to criticism.

Public broadcasting is an important political measure that is supposed to take care of citizens' demoratic and cultural needs in the public sphere. Across Europe, broadcasters like NRK face a paradox: their legitimacy depends on proactively making room for criticism and being open to feedback from the public, while at the same time they have to deal with harassment, threats, and coordinated campaigns.

This project looks into how NRK navigates in this landscape and how media criticism is understood, received, and handled. The researchers combine quantitative and qualitative studies of media critics and their messages, as well as how NRK facilitates and responds to criticism.

The project is part of OsloMet's strategic research area A Durable Democracy.
