Assessing the Impact and Sustainability of Dementia Villages: Nurturing Thriving in Dementia-Friendly Communities

The project examines how Dementia Villages influence health outcomes, thriving, and quality of life for people with dementia, their informal caregivers, and staff, while assessing the sustainability of this care model.

This project investigates the impact and sustainability of Dementia Villages as a model of care in Norway. Using a mixed-methods design, it combines register data, individual interviews, and participant observation to compare Dementia Villages with traditional long-term care facilities.

The study examines how care context influences behavioral and psychological symptoms, sleep, medication use, activity levels, and thriving among people with dementia.

It also explores informal caregivers’ experiences over time and healthcare personnel’s role in supporting meaningful everyday life. The overall aim is to generate evidence-based recommendations to strengthen quality, person-centred care, and sustainability in future dementia services.
