Ocean Air synoptic operations using coordinated autonomous robotic systems (OASYS 2)

The project develops coordinated air sea robotic operations using UAVs/USVs and micro gliders to reduce the cost of ocean observation and monitoring.

This project builds on OASYS 1, which developed low-cost, fully automated ocean–air robotic operations using micro underwater gliders supported by UAVs and USVs.

The supplementary work explores defence applications of these gliders, since larger models are already used at sea but rarely in littoral zones or ports, which are important for Norway. Hybrid propulsion will enable very shallow-water operations, and control methods for a swarm of three vehicles will be developed. Their defence use will be assessed with FFI and the Norwegian Armed Forces.

The project ends with a technical demonstration and discussions on future autonomous maritime and underwater glider concepts.
