The PhD project explores how artificial intelligence shapes digital citizenship education, focusing on AI literacy, ethical awareness, and sociotechnical imaginaries.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we learn, communicate, and engage in society. This project examines how AI impacts digital citizenship education, focusing on digital responsibility, ethical awareness, and emerging sociotechnical imaginaries. Digital citizenship involves responsible and critical engagement in digital communities, and schools play a key role in developing pupils’ competence in this area.
The project is relevant for teachers, pupils, school leaders, technology providers, and policymakers seeking insight into how AI can be ethically and pedagogically integrated into education. It explores how AI is used in teaching, what challenges and opportunities are perceived, and how AI literacy – understanding AI, its limitations, and ethical implications – can be developed and strengthened in schools.
The research questions address the consequences of AI for digital citizenship and how different actors engage with the technology. The project employs qualitative methods, including classroom observations, group interviews, and conversations with pupils and teachers. Using a sociotechnical lens, it examines how imaginaries of technology shape educational practices and understandings in schools.
