The project aims to strenthen the competency of the vocational teachers in traditional crafts by providing courses by craftsmen throughout the education.
Vocational teachers in Hairdressing, Floristry, Interior and Exhibition Design (FBIE) and Craft, Design, and Product Development (HDP) gain the competence to teach at vg1, vg2, and vg3 levels within their own education programs and in the subjects of Art and Crafts, Work-Life Subjects, Educational Choices, and relevant elective subjects in lower secondary school.
In order to strengthen the vocational teacher's competence in traditional crafts for a sustainable future, the project facilitates courses with various craftsmen over four semesters during the education.
Background
Many of our students choose to teach at the lower secondary level after completing their vocational teacher education. We consider it essential that students are introduced to traditional crafts through practical work in lower secondary school, as this can help make the crafts more visible, increase interest, and show possible career paths for today’s youth.
Through the project, the vocational teacher gets a unique opportunity and enough competence to provide students with vocationally relevant and vocationally oriented instruction so that students become familiar with different professions.
Goal
The main goal of the project is to provide students with training in hard, soft, and plastic materials in line with the competence objectives in arts and crafts at the lower secondary level. It preserves and conveys the immaterial cultural heritage; knowledge in sewing and textile crafts, woodworking, gold- and silversmithing, and ceramics.
Research question
How can the training of vocational teacher students in HDP/FBIE be strengthened so that they gain sufficient competence to teach arts and crafts, as well as other relevant elective subjects at the lower secondary level?
