Aksel Braanen Sterri

Aksel is a postdoctoral research fellow, leading a three-year research project funded by The Norwegian Research Council on the topic of "The Ethics of Contagion: How We Should Respond to the Spread of Infectious Diseases." He is based at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford, where he intends to build a framework for responding to the spread of contagious diseases grounded in individuals' moral responsibilities.

The project builds on his Ph.D. thesis in philosophy, where he examines our duties to people in need and particularly participants in delicate market transactions. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in the Oxford Handbook of Digital Ethics and journals such as Philosophical Studies, Journal of Medical Ethics, Journal of Applied Philosophy, and World Development Bioethics.

During his Ph.D., Aksel was a two-times visiting student at the Uehiro Centre at the University of Oxford before going to Harvard's Government Department on a Fulbright scholarship, under supervision by Professor Michael Sandel. Aksel is affiliated with and will return to Harvard's Government Department as part of his current research project.

At Harvard, Aksel was a Teaching Fellow in courses on technology ethics and epistemology. At the University of Oslo, he taught courses in applied philosophy, data ethics, and philosophy (Ex. Phil.).

After completing his MA in political science from the University of Oslo in 2012, Aksel worked as an analyst in the Norwegian Labour Party, a columnist and opinion page editor in Dagbladet, and an editor at Store norske leksikon. He has also written and edited several books: on social democracy, euthanasia (w/ Ole Martin Moen), global citizenship (ed.), and the Norwegian elite (ed. Knut Olav Åmås).
