About

Marcus holds a master's degree in sociology from the University of Bergen. For his master's project, he conducted biographical life-course interviews with adults in different social positions, aiming to explore the role play has had in their lives. His earlier research interests have therefore been closely tied to play, particularly the role play appears to have in working life.

In his current doctoral project, he directs his attention to employees in early childhood education and care settings. Through participant observation and interviews, he examines what it is like to work in a Norwegian kindergarten and the tensions and dilemmas that shape everyday work. The project is situated within an ongoing public debate about the early childhood sector, where questions about staffing and recruitment to teacher education have been central in recent years. His point of departure is that some of the solutions to these challenges require more knowledge about how work in kindergartens is actually experienced and organized in practice. Since the field is to a large extent dominated by pedagogical and psychological perspectives, a sociological approach can provide different and complementary insights.

Marcus is a qualitative researcher with core expertise in interviews and fieldwork. His theoretical interests include microsociology, ritual theory, play theory, professional studies and cultural sociology.
