Multilingual childhood

Why do children in Norwegian kindergartens play outdoor all year round? What does it take for children to learn more languages? This online resource can give you some answers and advice.

This online resource contains information for parents about why children in Norwegian kindergartens spend a lot of time outside, how children's languages develop and what kindergarten teachers do to create a multilingual environment.

Kindergarten teachers and public health nurses will find useful tools that can be used in parent-teacher conferences and health centre consultations, as well as tools to assess individual children's language skills.

In addition, there are several resources aimed specifically at Polish-speaking parents and kindergarten teachers living in Norway.

About PolkaNorski Implemented

The PolkaNorski Implemented (2024–25) project is an extension of the Polish–Norwegian research project PolkaNorski (2020–24), which has been a collaboration between the University of Warsaw, the University of Oslo and OsloMet.

We have examined the importance of training for parents to-be growing up with Polish and Norwegian, children's language development at the age of 0–6 years, language assessment tools for Polish-speaking children of kindergarten age living in Norway, and the differences between Polish and Norwegian kindergartens in outdoor play.

The research is currently being published. Some of the resources in this resource are results of the projects PolkaNorski and PolkaNorski Implemented.

More information can be found on the PolkaNorski project page (multilada.pl.en).
