Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – A comprehensive approach to assessing nursing students’ clinical competence

The project explores experiences with OSCE as an assessment method in bachelor's nursing education at OsloMet, aiming to enhance quality in assessment and students’ achieved learning outcomes.

This project explores nursing students’ and nurse educators’ experiences with the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as an assessment method following the course Fundamentals of Nursing 2 at OsloMet.

The study applies a mixed-methods design, combining focus group interviews with students, individual interviews with nurse educators, and a survey. The aim is to evaluate how OSCE assesses students’ knowledge, clinical skills, and overall competence, and to identify areas for improvement to strengthen learning outcomes and professional development.

OsloMet is the first institution in Norway to introduce OSCE for first-year bachelor’s students in nursing education. The project will contribute research-based knowledge to the field of nursing education and assessment practices.
