Economies of Everyday Family Lives in Norwegian Asylum Reception Centres

The project examines developments in financial benefits for families with children in Norwegian asylum reception centres and the consequences these have for families’ everyday lives.

There is limited knowledge about how benefit levels have developed in recent years, how changes are justified politically and administratively, and how families manage within the financial frameworks they are given.

The project combines a review of policy documents and benefit levels from 2017 to the present with qualitative interviews with residents of asylum reception centres, as well as staff and volunteers in civil society who interact with families in their daily lives. Particular emphasis is placed on families with children, and on how financial constraints affect children’s everyday experiences and family relationships.

The knowledge generated by the project will contribute to a better understanding of living conditions for families in asylum reception centres and provide an important basis for further discussions on policy, practice, and rights in this field.
