Leisure activities for Children and Youth in a Gender Equality Perspective

In this project, NOVA will review research from the last ten years that address children and youth’s leisure time in combination with perspectives on gender, gender equality and gender stereotypes.

Examples of the latter are norms, perceptions, practices and structures related to gender that can affect both boys’ and girls’ choices and participation in leisure time activities.

This research review will be based on systematic searches in library databases, on the Internet and subsequently hand searches in reference lists in publicised articles and reports. The main focus will be on Norwegian research, supported by Scandinavian literature. In addition to this review, NOVA will collect and systematise information about projects from the last ten years implemented in civil society organisations to improve gender equality among children and youth.

The research review is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Equality, and commissioned by a committee (#UngIDag-utvalget) that investigates gender equality challenges facing children and youth. The committee will finish its report ultimo 2019.
