Norwegian pupils in lower secondary school are increasingly reluctant to express their opinion and participate in discussions. As a consequence, Norwegian classrooms become more and more quiet, and the school's role as a training arena for democratic participation is weakened.
The project explores why pupils in lower secondary school are so reluctant to participate in classroom discussions and conversations.
We collaborate with Save the Children Norway and the Nobel Peace Center. Both organisations have developed educational resources used to strengthen young people's ability and willingness to participate actively in discussions on challenging social science topics.
In addition to systemising research on this subject, the project will provide scientific insight into how such activities can be structured and implemented so that young people will want to participate and feel competent in doing so.
