Poverty and Violence: Children’s Exposure to Violence in Light of the Family’s Economic Situation

The project examines what existing research tells us about connections between family economic conditions and children’s and young people’s exposure to violence in the family.

The aim is to strengthen the knowledge base on how low income and economic strain may affect parenting and family life, and how this may increase the risk of violence against children, in order to support better prevention and more targeted measures.

The project explores both potential direct links between low income and violence and the complex ways in which economic hardship interacts with other risk factors. It places particular emphasis on identifying knowledge gaps and areas requiring further research.

The chosen method is a qualitative synthesis of existing research. The selection of studies starts with key publications in the field and is expanded through targeted literature searches, reference harvesting, and conversations with other researchers. The analysis is interpretive and comparative, with each publication examined both on its own and in relation to the rest of the material. This approach makes it possible to identify dominant perspectives, tensions within the research field, and areas where knowledge remains limited.

The project is carried out in collaboration with Save the Children Norway.
