Complementary study programmes in Norwegian

If you wish to work in certain fields in Norway, you might need an authorisation of some sort, or you might just want to increase your opportunities on the job market.

To prepare for the demands you will meet in Norwegian professional life, you can apply for additional studies in:

The four study programmes we offer are primarily for refugees, and a supplement to the degree you already have.

All four programmes are full-time studies, taught in Norwegian at Campus Pilestredet in Oslo.

To apply for one of these study programmes, you need to be proficient in Norwegian and English (detailed information in Norwegian).

There are no tuition fees, only a semester fee (student.oslomet.no) of approximately 1000 NOK each semester.

  • Are you a bioengineer with a degree from outside the EU/EEA?

    The one-year programme in biomedical laboratory science is a step on the way to getting authorised as a bioengineer in Norway.

    You will learn about the practice of the biomedical profession in the Norwegian context. You will also get practice in medical biochemistry, bioengineering and bioengineering research.

    • Admission requirements

      To qualify for admission to this study programme, you must have:

      • a degree in biomedical laboratory science from a country outside the EU/EEA
      • sufficient proficiency in Norwegian and English
      • start the health personnel authorisation process
    • Health personnel authorisation process

      Health personnel who want to practise their profession in Norway must hold an authorisation.

      There are four steps to getting your authorisation to practise as a bioengineer. Completing the bioengineering programme is one of these steps.

      1. First you apply for the authorisation from the Norwegian Directorate of Health (helsedirektoratet.no) and receive their decision letter. 
      2. When you fulfill all admission requirements, you can apply for admission to the complementary study programme in bioengineering.
      3. Complete the complementary bioengineering programme and receive your transcript of records.
      4. You can now apply for authorisation from the Norwegian Directorate of Health with your transcript of records and proof of your language proficiency.

      Note that the language requirements are higher for obtaining the authorisation than the admission requirements to the complementary study programme.

  • Are you a nurse with a degree from outside the EU/EEA?

    The one-year programme in nursing is a step on the way to getting authorised as a nurse in Norway and you will have both theoretical and practical courses.

    You cannot complete this programme if you wear a face-covering clothing. You must adhere to the current guidelines for clothing at the site of professional training during clinical studies.

    • Admission requirements

      To qualify for admission to this study programme, you must have:

      • a degree in nursing from a country outside the EU/EEA
      • sufficient proficiency in Norwegian and English
      • a residence permit in Norway
      • start the health personnel authorisation process
    • Health personnel authorisation process

  • Are you a teacher with a degree from outside the EU/EEA?

    You must take this five semester study programme in teaching if you want to work as a teacher in Norway and get your teacher recognition.

    The programme starts up every other year, in January

    You take 60 ECTS credits in subjects of professional study. This includes pedagogy, knowledge of Norwegian society, language didactics and Norwegian language tuition.

    You also do a 60 ECTS credits specialisation in at least one school subject, as well as supervised teaching practice.

    Based on previous teacher education and/or through the complementary teacher programme, you must have earned 60 ECTS credits in at least one school subject or 30 ECTS credits in two subjects before final documentation of complementary teacher study programme can be issued.

    Before starting the third semester, you must have achieved level B2 for all skills on the Norwegian language test organised externally by Skills Norway.

    As part of the study programme, you receive support and guidance in how to improve your Norwegian language skills.

    NOKUT decides whether to grant final recognition of your teacher qualifications.

    • Admission requirements

      To qualify for admission to this study programme, you must have:

      • a teaching degree from a country outside the EU/EEA
      • sufficient proficiency in Norwegian (B1) and English
      • a residence permit in Norway
      • applied for and been granted recognition of your higher education by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT)
      • applied for recognition to work as a teacher in Norway by NOKUT and enclose the positive or negative decision and all relevant documentation

      You must submit a Norwegian certificate of good conduct (a criminal record certificate) (student.oslomet.no) before you can start your teaching practice during your studies.

    • Ranking of applicants

      Qualified applicants are prioritised in the following order:

      1. Applicants from refugee backgrounds whose application to work as a teacher in Norway has been rejected by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).
      2. Applicants without refugee backgrounds who have completed a teacher education outside the EU/EEA and whose application to work as a teacher in Norway has been rejected by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).
      3. Applicants from refugee backgrounds whose application to work as a teacher in Norway has been approved by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).
      4. Applicants without refugee backgrounds but who completed their teacher education outside the EU/EEA and whose application to work as a teacher in Norway has been approved by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).

  • Do you have a degree in engineering or technology from outside the EU/EEA?

    This one-year engineering and technology programme will help you to better use your skills and get relevant work in Norway.

    You will learn about Norwegian working life and society, and how to communicate as an engineer in Norwegian and English. During your studies, you will do internships in companies or laboratory exercises at OsloMet.

    • Admission requirements

      To qualify for admission to this study programme, you must have:

      • a three year degree in engineering or technology from a country outside the EU/EEA (currently, the programme is primarily for engineers with a professional background in construction, machinery and electronics)
      • sufficient proficiency in Norwegian (B1) and English
      • a residence permit in Norway

      Refugees are prioritised. Other qualified applicants compete for the remaining places.
