For libraries to be able to carry out their societal mission and adapt to change, it is necessary to have up-to-date knowledge of how they are actually used and what needs users have.
The development of major urban libraries in Norway over the past two decades has been closely linked to knowledge about users—who they are and what they do in the library. A solid knowledge base is important for designing relevant services, content, and library spaces in line with societal developments and user needs.
