About
Katarzyna Van Damme-Ostapowicz is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing and Health Promotion. She holds a habilitation degree in Health Sciences from the Medical University in Poland, where she defended her habilitation thesis in 2014. Habilitation is an advanced academic qualification, at a level above the PhD, which qualifies individuals for the highest academic positions at European universities. Katarzyna also holds a PhD in Medicine from a medical university in Poland, having defended her doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Nursing and Health Promotion in 2007.
Her educational background further includes a Master’s degree in General Nursing (2001) from the Medical University of Lublin, Poland; a Bachelor’s degree in General Nursing from Odisee University in Belgium; a specialization in Operating Room Nursing from a university in Belgium; and a specialization in Tropical Infectious Diseases from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium (2008).
Katarzyna has authored and co-authored multiple book chapters and possesses extensive teaching experience at the bachelor's, master's, and PhD levels at the Faculty of Health Sciences. She is also highly experienced in supervising master's students and PhD candidates. Furthermore, she has served as the head of an interdisciplinary student Research Group at the Faculty of Health Sciences at a medical university in Poland.
Based on her research, she has developed standards for patient education in health promotion, as well as a postgraduate program in tropical infectious diseases for master's students in nursing and midwifery. She also organized courses in tropical medicine at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, University of Nigeria, for students and staff from the Medical University of Białystok, Poland.
Katarzyna has practical work experience from the Norwegian municipal healthcare service, as well as from research projects conducted across Norwegian and Polish municipalities. From 2009 to 2013, she was listed in the International Council of Nurses (ICN) expert database as a specialist in home nursing.
Van Damme-Ostapowicz’s research interests include quality of life, health promotion, public health, health technology, and nursing education. She primarily utilizes quantitative research methods, though she also has experience with qualitative approaches. She has participated in and currently leads several national and international research projects.
