Karl Joachim Breunig har siden 2015 vært professor i strategi på Handelshøyskolen – OsloMet. Prof. Breunigs forskning fokuserer på koblingen mellom strategi- og innovasjonsteori, og involverer temaer som tjeneste- og forretningsmodellinnovasjon, entreprenørskap, samt digitalisering i kunnskapsintensive virksomheter. Han har doktorgrad i strategisk ledelse fra Handelshøyskolen BI, og mastergrad fra London School of Economics. Doktorgradsavhandlingen omhandlet sosiale nettverks betydning for organisasjoners dynamiske kapabiliteter, og ble tildelt Hedlund-prisen 2012-2014. Breunig har hatt forskningsopphold på Stanford University (2015), University of Oxford (2022) og Harvard University (2024), hatt bistilling (Professor II) ved NTNU-Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet (2016-18), samt har på OsloMet tidligere ledet forskergruppen DISKO-Digital Innovasjon og Strategisk Kompetanse i Organisasjoner (2017-23), samt PhD profilen BIG- Business Administration, Innovation and Governance (2021-23).
