Mirjam Lukasse utdannet seg til sykepleier i Sittard, Nederland og til jordmor i Belfast, Storbritannia. Hun har jobbet som jordmor i Pakistan, Nederland, Storbritannia og Norge. Hun gjorde sin masters utdanning (MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice in Midwifery) ved University of Surrey, Guildford, Storbritannia og sin PhD i helsevitenskap ved Universitetet i Tromsø, med disputas mars 2011. Tema for doktorgraden var overgrep i barndom og dets innflytelse på svangerskap og fødsel. Lukasse fullførte en 3-årig postdoktor periode ved NTNU (Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet), finansiert av NFR (Norges forskningsråd), i 2014. Lukasse har fortsatt med sin interesse og forskning på vold mot kvinner etter doktorgraden. Lukasse underviser ved jordmorutdanningen i både kliniske og teoretisk emner. Ved siden av forskningen på vold mot kvinner har Lukasse interesser i mange aspekter av jordmorfaget.
