About
Liv Merete Nielsen is professor emerita in Design Education. Her field of expertise is education in drawing and design including architecture and spatial representations in perspective of general education, visual communication, democratic user participation and sustainability. She holds a doctoral degree (Dr. ing) from Oslo School of Architecture (AHO) titled: Drawing and Spatial Representations - Reflections on Purposes for Art Education (2000) where she investigated youngsters drawing skills and discusses the results in perspective of understanding spatial representations in relation to development of local environments. She has initated and chaired several research groups including Design Literacy and the research network DesignDialog (since 2003). Nielsen cooperate at an international level through Design Research Society (DRS) where she is part of the convening group for Design Education Special Interest Group (EdSIG). She initiated the creation of Design Literacy International Network (DLIN) which she has co-chaired since 2019. DLIN gathers researchers from all over the world within the field of design and design education through webinars which are simultaneously translated into Spanish and Chinese. In 2008 she initiated the creation of the research journal FormAkademis', where she is section editor and co-owner. Nielsen has been appointed by the Norwegian government for development of national curriculum for both K-12 and University level. She has created articles and books often used in education of specialised teachers in the subject Art and Crafts, such as Fagdidaktikk i Kunst og håndverk – i går, i dag, i morgen [Education in Art, design and craft– yesterday, today, tomorrow]. This book illuminates the legacy of how design has been legitimised in general education in different times under different discourses.
