Roy Krøvel er professor i journalistikk på OsloMet og professor II på Samisk høgskole. Krøvel er sivilingeniør med hovudoppgåve om prosjektstyring og miljørisiko. Han fullførte i 2006 ein Ph.d i historie om geriljaorganisasjonar, bruk av internett og journalistikk i Mexico og Mellom-Amerika. Han har også vore professor II knytt til latin-amerikastudiar på Universitetet i Oslo.
Sidan 2008 har han koordinert eit samarbeid med nettverk for interkulturelle urfolksuniversitet i Latin-Amerika (RUIICAY) finansiert av DIKU og NORAD (NORHED). Han har sidan 2017 vore prosjektleiar for prosjektet «Making Transparency Possible» finansiert av Norges forskingsråd. Krøvel er ein av to leiarar av forskargruppa «Media, krig og konflikt» på OsloMet.
