Atle Wehn Hegnes har doktorgrad i sosiologi og er seniorforsker ved SIFO og NIBIO. Han har deltatt i en rekke nasjonale og internasjonale prosjekter og har erfaring fra prosjektledelse på alle nivåer. På SIFO har han tidligere ledet prosjektet IMAGINE, som tok for seg betydningen av forestillinger om bærekraftige fremtider. For tiden leder han arbeidspakker i EU-prosjektet CONVIVIUM og det norske prosjektet FOODprepared, som dreier seg om henholdsvis europeisk matkulturarv og beredskap gjennom lokale matsystemer i Norge.
