About
Marlen Strand Ferrer (b. 1973 in Barcelona) is a historian and Associate Professor of History Education at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University.
She received her PhD in History from University of Oslo in 2008 with a dissertation on Norse and Spanish medieval society, with particular emphasis on emotions, honour culture, and social structures.
Her research spans both medieval history and history education. In medieval studies, she has published work on honour, emotions, power, and courtly culture in Norse and Spanish sources, as well as on state formation in the High Middle Ages. Within history education, her work focuses particularly on the past as a foreign country, historical empathy, and critical thinking in history and social studies education.
Ferrer is the author of the scholarly book Fortidens annerledeshet (2026) and has also edited and contributed to publications on critical thinking in social studies. She regularly engages in public dissemination of historical knowledge through newspapers, podcasts, and television programmes, and has also published several works of fiction.
